Episode 15: Roll Out the Red Carpet for these League Losers

John and Brontë debrief on Sorcery Con sealed and Season 6 of Sorcery League. Plus, a statement on ongoing community news.

Howdy folks!

This week, we talked at length about the change’s we’ve seen in Sorcery constructed decks and how John keeps losing (and being inspired by losing!)

At the beginning of the episode, Brontë talked about his recent SorcereyCon experience and how he placed overall in the 2-day sealed tournament. Check out his super-duper-removal-packed sealed deck.

We also talked at length about how constructed has been shaped by the inclusion of Arthurian Legends avatar’s Archimago and Druid. Here are a few decklists we’ve been toying with post-league:

Despite John’s love of Avatar of Air, he been diagnosed with Druid Fever, please be with us in this turbulent time.

Lastly, in response to ongoing community news and outcry regarding Sorcery reprints, Death’s Door Podcast wants to remind the members of this community of the following:

We want this game to grow. That means we need new players and enough product available for new players to play. That requires a community that is welcoming and inviting and a supply of product that gives new players a shot at experiencing the game in the same manner tenured players have.

We happily welcome real critiques of the game, the publishers, the company and other facets of Sorcery: Contested Realm. We have taken tough stances on the game in the past and are not afraid to do so in the future. We are not affiliated, sponsored, paid by, or influenced by the official game nor its parent company.

We do not believe the sky is falling. We believe that the game is working out growing pains in a saturated trading card market that has been warped by the often delusional mindset of “collectability” and “scarcity.”

Under the guise of collectability, players have been manipulated by massive, publicly-traded corporations. We watch as games have become a place for scarcity-mindset and consumerism to thrive and exploit player’s desire to make “financial value” on a game.

When we as trading card game players conflate collectability with investments, it does a disservice to the game, the hobby and the community that holds an intrinsic value beyond a secondary-market price tag.

The value of a sealed case of Alpha does not take precedent over the value of a new player understanding how to put their opponent to Death’s Door for the first time, or when they realize that the Desert in their hand can wake up the Giantess they played last turn.

It does not take precedent over a thriving, local community who can gather and play games and build fellowship across diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

These are pieces of cardboard. It is not the stock market. It should not be your retirement plan. This is a game.
